If USAIR ever needs people to do commercials for them we are the ones to do it. Our flights to and from Israel were wonderful - more leg room, smaller plane and courteous service. Much less confusion than going through NY airport. So, as long as El Al remains too expensive we will be checking USAIR tickets.

We hope you have enjoyed following our time in Israel - a uniquely wonderful time. It is a beautiful day. The time always goes quickly and you find yourself back at the airport. We are going downtown for one last cup of cafe afook and sweet roll. We will spend the morning packing and cleaning up the apartment before leaving for the airport this afternoon.

This trip has been filled with many diverse experiences. Our time of working was one of the most rewarding we have had in many years and we feel, through our efforts, G-d has made a difference in their lives. One unusual thing that happened was how many people from our past we met just walking down the street, people we knew here 20 years ago we kept running into. This has never happened in past trips. It was a time of renewing old relationships.

Spiritually this has been one of our most rewarding trips. Many of these experiences will take time to digest fully and we will try to share them with you as they come clearer to us. But truly G-d has spoken to us here. Generally they concern the body's need to be spiritually prepared and alert for what is to be in the future.

We are pleased at how well the group has worked together. Gene and Corinne will be traveling on the same flight with us today. We appreciate all the work and support they have given while we've been here. Hopefully Sheri is already in the USA and making her way to Pensacola and will begin recovering quickly.

Nearing the End of a Wonderful Visit

Tonight Sheri will be going to the airport to return to the USA. Tomorrow we will be doing the same. How quickly the time has gone by. We just got a report from the family we helped and they are very excited about their newly painted apartment. It is the first improvements done to their place since her husband died. It was an ordained time from G-d. We are so pleased that they are happy with the work we did. I think it was one of the best work projects we have done in years.

Today we participated in the Temple Mount Sifting Project. What a wonderful time we had. We had to drag Gene to the car. He enjoyed it so much he didn't want to leave. I will post some pictures from the morning of sifting. Our leader at the sifting project mentioned they sometimes have volunteers come to work for a week at a time in the summer and fall. Something to think about....

We went downtown for one last time of hummus and fallafel. I don't think any of us should check our weight for at least a month.

Please pray for Sheri as she travels. She will be leaving the apartment at noon Pensacola time (7 pm Jerusalem time) and traveling alone back to Pensacola. We certainly enjoyed our time with her. She is team person always willing to go the second mile and do more. May G-d richly bless her for her efforts.

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hhcF69IeVJE/TrALPBYIVmI/AAAAAAAAAD0/7GOfnK5ntPk/s1600/IMG_0245.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; But seriously we are thankful that David is okay. We stopped on our way to Avdat at a cliffs edge to look off at the view. David began walking down a steep slope toward the edge of the cliff when the gravel starting sliding under him. He fell face first, his head slamming into a rock. He has injuries on his arm and leg but nothing as bad as his face. We found a Magen David station (first aid) and asked them to check him out but they said he should go to the hospital. Being of a stubborn disposition he refused. So, I drove for the rest of the trip while he rested. Since it has been four hours since it happened we pray he is okay and will recover quickly.

Other than this mishap it was a wonderful day. Will post more pictures later.

Taking off early this morning

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #222222; We returned the tools to storage this morning and drove to Beit Guvrin-Maresha National Park. The ruins here date back to the 2nd and 3rd century BCE (BC). It was inhabited until 12 century CE (AD) We looked at tombs and cisterns hollowed out by the inhabitants. In one burial cave appears an inscription mentioning Apollophanes, son of Sesmaios, leader of the Sidonian community of Marissa. The inscription and paintings shed light on the art, mythology and zoological erudition of the period, as well as the ethnic group of those interred (Edomite, Sidonian or Greek), family ties, burial customs and more. David certainly enjoyed the warmer weather at the park. When we drove back up the hill to Jerusalem the temperature began to drop again. It has been very cool most every day we've been in Jerusalem.

We plan on going out to dinner tonight to the Red Heifer Steak House for a last hurrah to celebrate our time here. Gene is certainly looking forward to tasting a little red meat.

Beautiful day in Israel

Sunny and cool this Sabbath morning. We are on our way walking to the Western Wall after a great breakfast of french toast and fruit salad - created by Gene and Sheri. By the way, those of you who know Gene - he has a new name he prefers. When he returns to Pensacola please call him Ladder. While we were working in Ramat Gan the lady of the house told us he was like a ladder because he is so tall. Every few minutes she would call Gene to help her telling him she was small and he was tall - could he please reach something for her. So, he grew into his new name of "Ladder." He really likes his new name.

Shabbat in Israel

What a beautiful sunny Friday in Jerusalem. Temperatures were warm enough even for David. The group spent time relaxing and recovering from working hard the last two days. We also enjoyed coffee and breakfast downtown. As the sun was about to set you could hear the siren sounding to signal the beginning of the Sabbath. Before the Sabbath began we enjoyed an afternoon of teaching from a local Bible scholar. He had to rush off home to arrive before the Sabbath began but left us with study material and many questions to ponder.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; It was such a wonderful day together. We spent a lot of time before coming to Israel praying for a close connection with the person we were to work with. G-d definitely honored that request. It was such a special family and special time together. The woman is a widow with seven children. Her oldest son, 19 years old, is in the army. He came home last night so he could help us work. He helped us paint until he had to return today. The Mother, M, worked along side us both days and continued to paint when we left yesterday.

It was one of the best work experiences we have had. She was so pleased with the results. Nothing had been done to her home since her husband died. She has struggled learning to live without him and was touched by our efforts. She said it was the first improvements done to their apartment since her husband died. Her family fled Iran in 1978 when she was a child to begin life again after persecution in Iran.

She cooked huge delicious meals for us each day which made it hard to continue working. A very generous woman. M lives on a street that is the most narrow street we have ever seen in Israel. Parking for cars is next to her building. The place was so small she volunteered to park our car for us. It was amazing to watch her negotiate back and forth until she got our car in the tiny parking place.

It was sad to leave today. She gave us hugs and said she was sure we would see each other again some day. We thank G-d for the opportunity to serve the people of Israel and pray G-d blesses this family with joy.

Great Day to be in Israel

After spending yesterday changing dollars to shekels, collecting work supplies and renting a van we left Jerusalem at 6:15 AM. Yes for all of you that have been here on work projects before - I repeat we left at 6:15 AM for Ramat Gan to work. What a dedicated group we have! We arrived at the work place at 7:30 much to the shock of the residents. We worked hard, got a lot accomplished and made some special friends. We had a fantastic lunch and after consuming it we had a hard time getting back to work. We finished work at 4 pm and had a concert put on by the 11 year old son playing the cello and 6 year old daughter playing the violin. We were greatly blessed in meeting this talented family. All seven children in the family play musical instruments. Tomorrow we return to the same family to continue working. Please pray for us as David drives us "quickly" thru Tel Aviv traffic tomorrow.

technical difficulties

We have been having problems posting to the blog. WE all traveled approximately seven thousand miles with different stops and different departure times planning on waiting at the airport until we all arrived. As the US Air group walked off the plane the person flying Delta stepped out of the adjoining doorway. We were not supposed to arrive at the same time and could never have planned it so perfectly but G-d's timing is always perfect. What a fantastic surprise for everyone to arrive at exactly the same moment and our airplanes to park right next to each other. We arrived at our beautiful apartment and quickly went downtown to a local "very local" restaurant to enjoy a plate of hummus, salad, and soup. Then we made our way to the coffee and pastry shop so we would have the energy to walk up the hill to our apartment. Tomorrow we shop for food, get supplies and tools. Tomorrow we are off to forage for food and and accumulate our work supplies. Pray for us as we start our work on Wednesday.

Out The Door...Almost

Here we are, sitting in the Philly Airport waiting to go through one last security check before we fly to Israel. In a couple of days we will be in Israel with the help of G-d. We will be working in Ramat Gan near Tel Aviv. I will be blogging each day so please follow along. I am really excited about this trip as I believe it is a time appointed by G-d for us to be there and to be helping the people of Israel in what ever way we can. Please pray for us that we will be a true help to the people and that G-d's name will be lifted up. We will be in the Land from October 24th-November 3rd. We will be working in the homes of needy Israelis. Our goal is to bless the people of G-d by meeting their physical needs as best we can.I also would ask you to pray about the coming few weeks and months as they pertain to Israel. This is a very dangerous time and Israel needs all the support they can muster. The entire Middle East is in turmoil, with many enemies of Israel gathering strength to unite against her. The news bears out the facts that Israel is facing an ever increasing threat to her very existence. My sources in Israel tell me that the chance of war is increasing by the day. All of us need to be in prayer about the coming months. I have in on good authority that Israel is calling up 40,000 reserves in the coming weeks to be ready for whatever may occur.I know all of us realize that the Maker of Heaven and Earth is in control of what will be and in that we draw comfort. Let our prayers be that His will will be done and Israel's foes will be defeated both in the practical realm as well as the spiritual.Shabbath Shalom to you allDavid Dorris

Today Jean and I spent our day in the Old City of Jerusalem, especially in the Jewish Quarter. We went tot the Western Wall and had a wonderful time. It is always special but today was out of the ordinary. The power and presence of G-d was very strong today. Both Jean and I could feel that as we approached the wall itself. I thought of all the people that here and leave without considering where they are or who they stand before.

This will be our last blog before we leave tomorrow. I hope you who have read it have been touched by our daily musing. It has been a spiritually high time for us and one that we will always treasure. We traveled with a group of about 20 people to a deep valley running from Jerusalem to Jericho. It is said to be the valley where Elijah was fed by the ravens. It was a beautiful site with a fast flowing stream, flowers all around and towering cliff faces. There was also a Monastery dating from the 5th century, and still in use. I will post pictures later. It is quite a site clinging to the side of the cliff. The day was beautiful, clear and cool. For those of you who like winding one lane roads you would have loved this trip. It was very difficult to pass another car and there were no guard rails, just my kind of road.

The most special time was a baptism service in one of the pools of water in the valley. Some friends of ours had a time for their two oldest sons to be immersed in the stream. It was very special and we felt honored to be part of it.

Tomorrow is the Shabbath, and also our last full day in Israel. It is always so difficult to leave, it never gets easier. Please pray for us these last couple of days. See some of you soon. We were in a meeting until about 10:30PM, then a bus ride home to our little apartment, sitting up talking until midnight. I think I am getting to old to stay up to midnight. The meeting was very productive for us and also a time to get together with friends. The weather was spectacular yesterday, with a high around 74 and last night was cool and clear.

Today is another story. It is hazy and hot. Here it is called a sharav, dry dusty and hot, not my favorite. We are going to walk and look at another two places where we might be able to house a group in October. It is two apartments of two bedrooms each. They are located in the same building so it might work. It is just a short walk to the middle of downtown which would also be nice. Another meeting after that and then dinner with friends tonight. Our time is going far to quickly with only a few days left before we leave. However it has been a very productive trip for us and one that I think will bear fruit in the future. Thank each of you for your prayers, I feel better each day and only have a slight cough remaining.

May G-d bless you all today with peace and mercy.

David

Yom HaShoah

Today is Holocaust Memorial Day here in Israel. Jean and I were in central Jerusalem when the siren was sounded. It is an awesome sight to see the city come to a stop for 2 minutes. Cars stop and drivers stand silently by their autos. There is no sound except for the wail of the siren. I would hope each of us would pray for the people still living who went through this awful time in world history. Their only reason for being singled out for murder by the Nazis was that they were Jewish. Never should this happen again in human history. We must be vigilant in our stand against such evil in this world.

n the midst of this somber day it was good to hear that finally Usama Bin Laden had been killed. Here in Jerusalem there was support and encouragement from the people and from the government of Israel. Americans are in no danger here, in fact there is a sense of commonality of focus and thought between Israel and America as we both deal with terrorists around the world.

Holocaust Remembrance Day has just begun in Israel. It is for the 6 million Jews that were murdered by the Nazis. This past weekJean and I renewed an old friendship with a lady in Hod HaSharon. She and her husband came to Israel in 1948 from the camps. They had no other family. It was quite sobering to sit and talk to her about those years and her time in Israel. I would pray that each of you that read our blog would take time to remember and pray for the people still alive from that time and that still struggle with the memories.

Today we also visited the home of Marcel. We painted her house a year ago and it was good to see her again. She is well and thanked all who came to help her.

Tomorrow Jean and I are visiting a few places that we may use as a base for our coming trip in October. The sky is overcast and the temps in the mid 60's. Maybe it is an appropriate way to lead up to Holocaust Remembrance Day. This is always a somber day as Israel remembers the six million who perished. The day will be given over to stories of survivors and programs to keep alive what happened 70 years ago. Today there are people who deny that it ever took place, I would pray all of us who have the ability would speak out against such lies. Jean and I are going to try to get to some of the events and take part in all we can.

Tomorrow we also visit Marcel the lady who has been in wheel chair for the last 27 years. Our group painted her apartment last year and she seemed thrilled to hear that we are coming over for a visit.

Please pray for me, I have had a nagging cough since we arrived and can not seem to be done with it. Jean and I joined pretty much every person in Israel (or so it seemed) to do our Shabbath shopping in the shuk in Jerusalem. It was a really nice time, seeing shop owners that we had not seen in a year and getting those things we needed for the meal tonight. In a couple of hours the siren will sound here in Jerusalem to welcome in the Shabbath and we will light the candles. There is really no city on earth like this one. G-d's presence rested here and still rests here. It is evident as you approach Shabbath that this is no ordinary day. Jean and I pray for each of you His peace this day and rest in Him. I had to let Jean out with our luggage to sit beside the street until I could return the car and walk ( as quickly as possible) to get back to her and check in. The car return and walk taking about 30 minutes. After settling in we wen to the shuk to buy what we needed for the next few days. Our arms are for sure longer now than they were when we set out. To top it all off it rained today which is very strange for this time of year. Tomorrow we meet the daughter of Rosa to give her the money we have collected ($300.00). She it very excited about it. Rosa is still unable to cope with meeting people. After that meeting our goal for the day is to get whatever we need for the Shabbath, so I think our arms will get another workout. Please continue to pray for us, especially tomorrow when we meet with Rosa's daughter. G-d bless each of you tomorrow as you prepare for the Shabbath. We had a great time visiting and stayed up until past midnight talking and checking up on how all our lives were going. Our discussions ranged from theological to the more mundane day to day. Food was great and the conversation was stimulating. We left at around 9:00AM this morning and stopped at our favorite cafe in Hod HaSharon. We sat and talked with the owner, a wonderful lady, for a long time. Her business is one of the ten oldest in Israel and was recently featured on Israel TV. After our time with her we went on to Caesarea to have a great meal at a seaside restaurant. Jean found a kitty to feed so she was right at home. The flowers in the North were beautiful today with poppies and holly hocks in full bloom. We check into our small apartment tomorrow for the remainder of our stay, our time is going much to quickly. May G-d bless you all each day. It begins in just a couple of hours. Today has been a day filled with soaking in the beauty of the Holy City of Jerusalem, unlike any other place in the world. The streets were filled with people getting whatever they need for the meal tonight and enjoying the beautiful weather. The sky was crystal clear with a view of the Dead Sea possible from the Mt of Olives. We were able to meet with old friends and have a cup of coffee at a little outside cafe on Jaffa Road. Tomorrow will be a quite day and then on Tuesday we travel North of a couple of days before returning to Jerusalem for the last ten days of our stay. When we return we hope to visit some of the homes where we have worked in the past few years. I look forward to seeing some of these friends again and to see how they are coming along. Please continue to pray for us during our time here that every minute will be spent just as the Father would have us spend it. Hag Samach to each of you. The drive to Jerusalem was beautiful. The wild poppies and holly hocks were blooming in all the fields as we drove up the hill to the city. The weather is great. We left Pensacola with 85 degrees arrived here to about 55 degrees and low humidity. Today is taken with a meeting with the group that is our spiritual covering which should be very good. As my head clears I will write more. We went to bed at 9:00Pm woke up at 2:00AM, which if you are wondering is not a good thing. We will see how today goes. The flights went well with ELAL again winning the best airlines award by a mile. We all left Israel with mixed emotions. Looking forward to seeing family and friends here in America. However with a sense of remorse in leaving new found friends in Israel. I think the people of Israel changed us forever. The vendors on the streets or just the people on the city buses that we met each day. Of course those that changed us the most were those in whose we worked and sweated each day. Those with whom we forged a special bond that will last a eternity. Please pray for them. Also please pray for Israel. During our time there the whole Gaza boat incident happened and the world was quick to pounce on Israel as the aggressor. However, being in the country and seeing the local reaction to the incident gave a far different picture of what happened and left us to ask why the world is so quick to judge Israel for something that any country would do to protect it's citizens.

We have returned but G-d willing we will be there again in a few months. Probably one of the most impressive sights was to be in Metulla in the very most north of the country and see how close the enemies of Israel are to the civilian population of Israel. Tomorrow it is off to Jerusalem and will write more then.

Last Work Day

Today was a wonderful day. We finished the work in the handicapped woman house and more than the work had a glorius day of fellowship with her and some other people in her house. Physically it was a titing day but the spiritual rewards made it more than worthwhile. Tomorrow we go to do some fun things like doing the dig of the Temple Mount rubble and a visit to the Kennesit for a tour. We have a guest speaker tonight and also tomorrow night. We worked at the home of an Ethiopian woman and it was a great day. Her house looked great after we finished, white makes everything look better. We has a great Ethiopian meal and a good prayer time together. The other team also worked in the home of an Ethiopian immigrant today as well. We thank G-d for the chance to bless these people the sons and daughters of Abraham. Tomorrow we have another day of painting and then on the dig here in Jerusalem. Thank each of you who pray for us, this has been and will continue to be a blessing to these people and also to each of us. After a nights rest(some slept better than others) we were off to work today. One group worked in the home of an Ethiopian single mother. Fixing and repairing many broken things. The second group worked in the home of a disabled Israeli lady. Her house has not seen a coat of paint in many years. We will return to her house on Wednesday to finish. While there, at her request, we prayed for her. She has frequent battles with bladder infections and today she was not feeling well at all. She has been in a wheelchair for 28 years but continues to praise G-d for all He does for her. Tomorrow is suppose to be very hot. We will begin work in two more homes at 8:30 am and work all day. This past trip was amazing and will be hard to top, but I think bigger things lie ahead. We plan to return to sifting project of the rubble thrown out from the Temple Mount. Space is limited on the next trip so we need wisdom on who should go. The transition between Israel and America is never easy, but this time has been especially hard, I would assume that is because of what happened in Israel. May G-d bless the Jewish people and the Land of Israel each day. The last couple of days were spent in the Galilee touring and seeing the beautiful north of Israel. This was one of the best trips we have had, the people who went with us were great and were always happy to do whatever was needed. We had life changing experiences, perhaps one of the most powerful was when we helped at the Temple Mount sifting project. This work was taking some of rubble thrown out by the Muslim authorities in charge of the Temple Mount and sifting through it for artifacts from the First and Second Temple period. These stones were covered by the ash from the burning of the Second Temple by the Romans. I had never had an experience quite like it. To have the ashes from the Second Temple on our hands was amazing. Please pray for our coming trip in May 2010. It will be here faster than we think. May the G-d of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob bless each of us. The weather in Jerusalem was cool and pleasant. After we had decended 4,000 feet to the floor of the Jordan Valley that was no longer the case. The temps were in the mid 90's and the air was thick with dust. We arrived at Massada in mid morning and took the cable car to the top. We had a great time touring the top of the mountain and left for as swin in the Sea. Everyone had a great time floating on the Dead Sea. We arrived back in Jerusalem In the afternoon and are soon on our way to eat at a local Italian restaurant. We just finished two hours at the Temple Mount archeology dig. We were sifting thru the rubble that was dumped by the Muslims in digging under the Temple Mount. Artifacts have been found as far back as the time of the first temple. Our group found pottery pieces from the first temple period. Our guide pointed out that everything we touched was covered in gray ash. This ash was left from the burning of the first and second temples! What N awesome
feeling to know we were actually touching the remains of the temple! We will definitely return again next year. After collecting the suite cases we were off the the hotel. Everyone made the trip well and hopefully will get a good nights sleep. Of course I doubt that since jet lag has a way of disrupting our schedule. For example it is now 2:30 in the morning and I am doing this blog. We exchange money today do a little sight seeing and then off to the first work projects. Both will be near Tel Aviv so it will be a trek. It rained off and on Wednesday as we picked olives with the young people from the boys ranch. The usual olive picking technique is to put a cover under the tree and then hit the tree with sticks to make the olives fall to the ground. Then everyone joins in picking up the olives. Being novices at this job we were given bags and told to pick olives by hand. Our job didn't look nearly as fun as what the boys were doing but we did out best. One of the counselors told us the young people help pick the olives, then the olives are taken to a olive press and the oil is removed. They are paid by the weight of their product and this is one way they support the farm. Everyone takes part in the work. We arrived to help in the picking right as lunch was being served. We were invited to join them. They had chicken cooking on the grill and all kinds of salads to eat. The food was all donated by someone. They even brought their grill and catered the whole affair at no cost to the farm.

After we picked olives for a couple of hours it began to rain harder and we decided to head back to the hotel to dry off and clean the mud off our shoes and clothes. Driving back to Jerusalem we saw one of the hardest rains we've ever seen in Jerusalem. It may have slowed down our touring schedule but it was something to celebrate since Israel needs the rain so badly. Israelis get as excited to see rain as people living in Pensacola Florida do about snow.

This morning the sun is shinning and we are headed back to the boys ranch to tour the facility and to visit the Herodian, Herod the Great's castle that was built before the Messiah. Please pray for safety for us as we drive each day.

Another Work Day

Four of us spent the day Sunday painting an apartment of a Jewish believer in Jerusalem. She is a single woman who lives with her 96 year-old mother. It was an easy work day because the work space was all ready and prepared for us to start - not standard procedure here :) Everything was off the walls and all the furniture was moved so that we could go to work - it ended up taking us only half a day.

Since yesterday was the beginning of the holiday of Shavout (celebrated in the Christian church as Pentacost) - it is treated like a Shabbat and everything shuts down. The Jewish community stays up all night - studying the Torah - - as this holiday celebrates the giving of the Torah. It is one of the BIG three holidays where all Jewish males are commanded to go to Jerusalem if possible - so at daybreak we walked down to the Western Wall in the Old City and there were at least 30,000 people smunched together praying at the Wall. An awesome and moving sight to see.

Our last day in Jerusalem is tomorrow - pray for our safety and safe return to our families in the States and that whatever seeds we were able to plant will be nurtured and grown ad G-d wills it

Leaving Haifa

Today saw the end of our last work day in Haifa. It was about 100 degrees so it was plenty hot. I think the two families were happy with our work. I thought the places looked very nice when we finished. Jean D'Anne and I did get about an hour on the beach in Haifa so that was a nice way to finish off the day. We went to Karmiel and had dinner with a friend of ours from America. Some of you may remember Danny Kerkivel. He now works with Bridges for Peace and was able to help us for a couple of days.

Tomorrow we return to Jerusalem via the Jordan Valley and the Sea of Galilee.

Continue to pray for us, we have one more work day on Sunday right before Shavuot.

David

First Work Day

Today was our first work day in Haifa. We split up into two work groups with each of the groups working in the homes of single mothers. The homes were in pretty bad shape with a lot of mold and peeling paint. We were able to get a good start with each house and will be back tomorrow and probably finish up on Thursday. We will head back to Jerusalem on Friday morning.

Yesterday was Jerusalem Day and it was quite an experience. We all went over to the old city to watch the parade, but the most interesting thing was watching the people passing by. Jerusalem in one of the most interesting places in the world. You can literally see the world pass. As we were going back to the hotel room a group of young orthodox men stopped traffic and and danced and sung for a long time, it was really something to see. Eventually a group of soldiers joined them and were singing and dancing. So as I said it like no other place on the planet.

Well must get off to bed and get ready for the coming day. Sunday they drove to Haifa to check out the possible work projects to be done. The first place visited was a Russian immigrant and her 14 year old son. She lives in 2 rooms, she is a single mother. The bathroom has mold and peeling paint falling from the walls. The window frames in the kitchen have gaps between the wood and window panes allowing wind and rain to come in. All her doors and windows have paint peeling and will need to be sanded and painted. Her only work is a part time job paying minimum wage.
The second work site in Haifa is near the sea. Again it is a single Mother who immigrated from Russia. She has a son in the army with mental problems and at this time is AWOL. She has two small rooms with mold in the bathroom and kitchen. The outside wall on the porch is cracked allowing water to come into the apartment and security bars that are rusted and needing paint. Both women live in poor rundown neighborhoods.
Since these women are Russian they have a limited knowledge of Hebrew and speak no English. Please pray for us that we will be able to communicate with them and touch them spiritually, giving them hope for the future.

Sorry it has taken me a couple of days to make this posting. The experience in Tel Aviv was really something. We went to work on Wednesday and worked pretty much all day. There were at least 10 girls that came in and out during the day. It was very difficult to see these young women, part of the chosen of G-d and the state they were in. Some had been beaten, all were hungry and tired and looking for a safe place to rest and recover from a night of trauma. Most were drug addicts and all had major probelms. I kept thinking that here were the daughters of mothers and fathers that had no idea what had happened to their children. To say it was a heavy two days would be an understatement. We prayed before we went and while we were there.

However in the middle of it all were rays of hope. We know that G-d loves them and wants them to be aware of that love that can fill the dark places in their lives. After a fresh coat of white paint the place looked much better. We were also able to leave them ten sets of sheets and a blanket as well as buying a freezer to help with the food situation and for that I am truly thankful.

Tonight we had a nice kabbalat shabbat in our room after a day in the old city of Jerusalem. It is quite a sight to see the full moon rise over the Holy City.

Tomorrow we go north for a few days so you will not hear from us until Tuesday of the coming week.

Thank you all for your prayers for us please continue. Please pray that Jean and I find our camera that has gone missing.

Shabbat Shalom to you all.

David

Today in Israel

We arrived in Tel Aviv yesterday after a good flight on ELAL. Most of you know Gil our driver. He picked us up and brought us to the Holy City and after a great supper at Mt. Zion we all turned in for a well deserved night of rest. I woke up at 1:00AM and thought it was 5:00AM. So much for a good nights sleep. In any case, we had a good bradkfast at the Hotel and then traveled down town in Jerusalem to change money and to do a little shopping at the Shuk.

The women stayed down town while Johnny, Ernie and I traveled to Tel Aviv to vist the first work place. Please pray for us as we work at this place for both spiritual protectiona and physical protection. The people that work at the site in Tel Aviv minister to the physical and spiritual needs of some of the most needy people in Tel Aviv. While we were there, there were two women asleep in the center. These people are in a terrible condition, being both prostitutes and drug addicts. Even among these groups they are at the bottom of the ladder. Most sleep on the streets and so are victim to any and everybody that comes by. The place itself is in terrible repair. The ceilings drip of sewage from the street above and mold is ever present. But with G-d's help we can make a difference in the days to come.

We do need your prayer support each day and appreciate that we can call on each of you.

I will follow up tomorrow after our first full day.

May G-d bless you out of Zion.

David

October 21, 2006

We arrived in Israel safe and sound on October 16th going straight to the city of Tzfat in the northern Galilee. We worked with a local Jewish non-profit agency named Livnot U'Lahibanot, meaning to build and to be built. We spent two days painting and cleaning bomb shelters which had been used during the recent Lebanese war. These will be used for multiuse purposes like childrens activities and elderly people classes. It was very rewarding work to be able to be part of the recovery process of the country from this terrible war. We stayed at the facility of Livnot which was pretty basic but was a good experience for us . We got to know some of the staff which was also very rewarding in its self.

After our time there we spent Thursday touring the Galilee and arrived in Jeruslam late on Thursday. Friday we spent in the western side of Jerusalem shopping and relaxing which was very nice.

Tomorrow, Shabbat we will go to the Western wall and also spend a good bit of the day in study of the Torah portion for the week and discussions. Later a local person will come to speak with us about their perspective on the situation here in Israel.

Sunday we begin our work in the homes of terror victims, so we expect to have a busy time in the next few days. Please continue to pray for us.

Shabbat Shalom to you all

Take Off

Road to Zion leaves today to travel to Israel. We have seven people traveling with us this year. We will spend the first three days working in Tzfat near the border with Lebanon- - orthodox community and ancient city - where we will work on bomb shelters that were damaged during the recent war with Hizbollah and Lebannon. We will then travel to Jerusalem and continue our work with victims of terrorism - repairing their homes. We will try to update this as often as possible. We painted her home, cleaned the floors, and garden, folded clothes and left gifts for her and the kids. Shira has had to return to work (she wasnt working when she was married) and she has very little - but the apartment was very artistically decorated. I really liked it

Tonight David and Ariella are coming to the hotel to visit - we met him and his wie four years ago on the first trip for me - he was beaten and stabbed 12 times by Palestinian teen agers and left for dead - some people found him and somehow he survived - he had not spoken to any one in 9 months when we visited the first time and had never had a Christian in his home - and after our first visit - he talks and talks and has such a sweet spirit - he calls my dad in the States about once every month

Galilee - a tour

Okay on the last post I accidently wrote that it was 120 Celcius - and as my father generously pointed out - that would be close to about 400 F - and although it was suffocatingly hot - I did not witness any spontaneous combustions - which I sure I would have if it had actually been 120 C

Yesterday - was a nice day of working - my group went t Tikva's house (someone we know from a trip four years ago - and to whom we are very close relationshipwise) She is a single mother of 3 children and has been having a difficult time since her husband left, took their business and is now trying to take their children through the court - she was moving out of the home we worked in 4 years ago and scaling down to save money for the court costs - she supports herself (and her children) by selling jewelry - beautiful Yemenite jewelry. Her landlord has been giving her a hard time about moving out - trying to charge her for things that are not her responsibility - and in Israel it is more complicated than in the States. It is not a matter of getting her deposit back - the landlord in Israel has a legal contract with the renter and has a "guarantee" that they will keep their end of the contract -he wwas trying to say that she was breaking the contract by the condition of the house (which by the way was much better than when she moved in 4 years ago - at that time the stove was fallen down in the cabinets, the doors wouldn't lock, it was filthy, the front "yard" was so grown up you couldn't get to it) Part of the issue with the landlord is emotional - the property used to belong to his daughter - and about 6 years ago he was driving through the neighborhood with his wife and daughter when someone threw a molotov cocktail through the window - killing his wife and daughter and severely burning him. Short version - I started taking pictures of the house to show what condition it was in after we painted and cleaned it - and mentioned the fact that I had pictures of the condition of the home 4 years ago that I could send to her lawyer - he then decided he could compromise. :)

Today we are going to the Druze Village, Capernaum, Church of the Beatitudes, Mount Carmel, and eating dinner on a boat on the Sea of Galilee. It should be a great day-then back to Jerusalem to work one more day -

Shabbat

We had a time of fellowship last night with Shaul and Orli - friends of ours from the time when we lived in the land - he spoke vry powerful words about the land and that there was no middle ground as far as the alliance with Israel - you are either for her or against her and even though there is a lot of "wrongdoing" among the people of the land that we have to allow God to deal with those issues and not judge them for ourselves - that we must follow Yeshua whereever he goes and whatever that means

Today it was a Humsin - which are the hot desert winds - that are VERY hot - we had scheduled a trip to the Dead Sea, Ein Gedi and Masada - with a friend of ours - Bryan - he is working on his Phd in Archaeology. He read the account from Josephus on the way down - about the Jewish War - and then half the group hiked up the snake trail and the other half went up the cable car to Masada. It was SO hot on top of the mountain - about 120 degrees Celsius - some of the guys got sick trying to hike up the mountain - and we all sweated off about 20 liters of water - it reminded me of trips down to the Sinai Desert when I was a child and it really felt like being in an oven - seriously. It is always a moving experience to me to see the mountain of Masada - because so much of it is preserved and remains in its original form. Bryan contributed a lot with his knowledge of the 1st century nation and what it must have been like for them there.

We then went on to lunch and some of us swam in the Dead Sea for about an hour - bobbing up and down. We moved on to Ein Gedi and read the scriptures about David and Saul and looked over the same hills that Saul probably hid in. On the way back to the Holy City we stopped for a camel ride and to purchase jewelry from the Bedouin who owns the camel - I always have to get one thing from him when I am here .

Shavuot in Israel

Yesterday we met Shmulik and he spoke with us about the history of Jerusalem and Israel. We also met Itzhak - a friend of his - he wanted to meet us he said because it touched his heart so much - what we were doing with our work here. He compared what we were doing to the life saving work of doctors with lukemia patients in the hospitals here - after spending a few hours in the Old City - Half o f us went to Ben Yehuda and ate delicious shwarma and walked around the city - there are SO many tourists here this trip - especially American high school students seeing the land - everywhere you go you hear people speaking English

This morning we woke up at 4:30 AM and went to the Kotel (the Western Wall) - it is the holiday of Shavuot and is one of the three holidays that the Hebrew Scriptures commanded for the men of Israel to come to Jerusalem (the first being Passover and the third being Sukkot) There were swarms of people making their way to the Kotel before sunrise to pray - once we got there it was so packed you couldn't get even halfway down the courtyard area to the Wall (probably 30,000 people praying easily) we stayed for about an hour and listened as the young men sang and prayed together - it really is a moving site to see that many people in prayer together. There were soldiers and police everywhere patrolling because it always heightens the risk of something happening - when large amounts of people gather together like that and especially on a holy day - so we were very aware of our surroundings and made sure to watch those around us

At 11:00 today we are going to the Israel Museum to see the Dead Sea Scrolls and the replica of the temple. It is supposed to be a great museum

please excuse any spelling errors - there is no spell check and I have to try to post these quickly before the hotel computer boots me offline

We're here!

We hit the ground running. After an excruciatingly long airplane ride - we arrived at the hotel safe and sound - the airplane we were on was delayed 1 and 1/2 hours on the ground in Atlanta and then we endured a 12 hour plane ride to Tel Aviv. We arrived at the hotel after dinner hours but they graciously held dinner for us

My group had a great first two days in the home of Aliza and Eitan and their 4 children - Eitan is an employee of the local phone company and was stabbed and shot outside the Damasxus Gate - while he waited in his car for other employees to join him in laying phone cable two years ago. We painted their entire apartment (for a family of 6 - the 900 square feet was very cramped) and repaired a leaking ceiling. Aliza insisted on feeding us both days - and would not take no for an answer whe we were asked if we were hungry or thirsty. We took the family gifts today - which they graciously accepted - with humble hearts. It is difficult to give the gifts sometimes - we must find a way that makes them feel special and not be condensending -

Aliza creid when we left today - she said it had been so nice to have people in her home for hte last two days and that we (and all of our friends adn family - "anyone i our congregation" ) were welcome to come stay with them when we were in the country or if we needed a meal - they were so grateful - tomorrow - we will take atour of the Holy City before the holiay of Shavuot - and on Saturday we will go to Qumran and Masada before the next work project.

Love to you all

Two Days and counting

We leave in two days and everyone is excited to finally get to the Land.
